Excerpt from Steam Traction Engineering: A Book for Operating Engineers
The purpose of this book is to present in as compact a form as possible those principles which underlie a thorough knowledge of steam traction, farm or portable engines.
It has been the object of the authors to deal with the subject herein treated in a practical way as applied to everyday work rather than to discuss theories and mathe metical problems. The book has been written in simple language and in such detail that an engineer of average intelligence will have no difficulty in following the instruo tions given.
The name, nature and function of the principal parts of the steam boiler and engine of these machines have therefore been set forth with the directions for their opera tion or use. Considerable space has been given to troubles which may arise in the course of operation, to the method to be followed to determine their causes and how they may be removed or the part affected repaired.
In order to help the engineer to follow the functions and operations of the various parts of the boilers and engines the authors have illustrated the book with a large number of sectional views.
It is hoped that many operators of engines will profit by the facts given in this book and will therefore be better able to cope with the many trying problems that will be met from day to day.
